Role overview
The Data Centre Engineer will be responsible for maintaining and supporting the efficient operation of a data centre facility, including the infrastructure and IT equipment. The role encompasses regular inspection of systems, proactive monitoring for issues, capacity planning, and managing vendors. The ideal candidate will ensure the physical and environmental integrity of the data centre while adhering to best practices for equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
What you'll do
• Monitoring & Inspection: Review the Building Management System (BMS) and Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) for alerts, negative trends, and perform physical inspections of computing and facility infrastructure.
• Proactive Facility Management: Regularly check the premises for any concerns or issues and assist in the planning and maintenance of facility infrastructure systems.
• Vendor & Contractor Management: Liaise and work with vendors, contractors, and third-party technicians for maintenance and repair tasks
• Infrastructure Monitoring: Proactively monitor the data centre infrastructure for potential issues, supporting capacity planning and efficient operation.
• Equipment Handling: Rack, cable, and configure IT equipment as needed, replace failed components, and ensure equipment is correctly handled.
• Physical Labour: Lift and move equipment as required, work on ladders and under raised floors as necessary.
• Asset Management: Maintain accurate records of incoming and outgoing equipment, adhering to asset management and label standards.
• Power & Environmental Monitoring: Regularly review power consumption and environmental conditions within the server rooms, taking appropriate action to maintain optimal conditions.
• Inventory & Documentation: Maintain an inventory of regularly used items and update facility-related documentation as required.
• General Maintenance: Perform light electrical work, maintenance tasks, and occasionally install systems.
• System Testing: Configure and test server, network equipment, fiber optic cabling, operating software, and systems to ensure functionality.
• Trouble Ticket Management: Manage trouble tickets with customers and operations teams, ensuring timely resolution of issues.
• Housekeeping: Ensure a clean and tidy working environment through general housekeeping activities.
What are we looking for
• Technical Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of data centre management methodologies and best practices.
• Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Practical experience in diagnosing, installing, troubleshooting, replacing, or decommissioning IT and facility equipment.
• Critical Infrastructure Experience: Knowledge of critical infrastructure equipment such as UPS, generators, BMS, chillers, and Fire Safety Management (FSM).
• Hardware & Software Knowledge: Proficiency in standard hardware, software, and internal networks.
• Networking: Understanding of carrier networks, protocols such as BGP, and router configurations.
• IT Equipment Support: Experience supporting IT equipment or related technology in a mission-critical environment.
• Certifications: Relevant certifications such as CompTIA (A+, Server+, Network+), and Basic Structure Cabling (BSC) are desirable.
• Attention to Detail: Meticulous in maintaining documentation, inventories, and ensuring proper handling of equipment.
